The following details offer a short description of
each role:
Nanny/Housekeepers
This position differs from the role of nanny in that
work is carried out for all the family and not just
for the child/children.
Usual duties include: general house cleaning, family
laundry, some cooking meals and may or may not
include some help with entertaining (i.e. serving,
cooking/preparing for dinner parties). If no cooking
is required, some food preparation may be helpful.
In some cases, where a driver is requested, errand
running, shopping and school runs would be included.
In addition, some babysitting can often be required.
A Nanny/Housekeeper position can either be a live-
out or live- in post, although the latter is more
usual.
Live-in Housekeepers
A good and reliable live-in Housekeeper will always
be in demand. The position generally involves the
preparation of family meals and occasional dinner
parties and often requires a willingness to assist
with children. Above all the role demands a flexible
and willing person who adopts a 'hands on' approach,
coupled with a positive and professional attitude.
Occasionally, the Housekeeper may be responsible for
the care of expensive furniture, antiques or
clothing. Excellent references confirming competence
and capabilities will be required.
Daily Housekeepers
A daily Housekeeper can either be full-time or
part-time and visits the household daily. Duties
would usually entail general household cleaning and
in some cases may include undertaking laundry and
ironing. Other duties may include some food
preparation, errand running ,dog walking and pet
feeding. Where the employer is not always in
residence, a Daily Housekeeper may be entrusted with
keys for access and to deal with any emergencies.
Domestic Couples /
Singles
In great demand, are the combination of skills
offered by couples/singles who are experienced
Gardeners and Housekeeper/Cooks and Butler/Drivers
with Housekeepers. Solid references are essential
and a good track record is invaluable. Often
accommodation is offered in addition to the salary
package, therefore Couples/Singles will consider the
overall 'package' of the position.
Chefs/Cooks
These positions can often offer straightforward,
autonomous control of a kitchen, or may also include
other duties, such as some housekeeping, management
of other kitchen staff and some butler duties.
Butlers
Butlers will need to be self-assured and discreet
and have incredibly high standards of work. A Head
Butler may be required to take responsibility for
other household staff and undertake additional

capacity of Valet, it is essential to have knowledge
of caring for all aspects of a wardrobe, including
packing and unpacking.

or in a corporate environment. Chauffeurs will be

also need to have a good track record of safe and
dependable driving. Flexibility is essential, as is
the willingness to work long hours.
Estate Managers
Although an Estate Manager’s duties may vary hugely
depending on the size of the estate, in general
his/her role is, as the name suggests, that of
managing every aspect of the function of the
establishment. On larger estates, they may be
responsible for other staff, accounting and
bookkeeping, while on a smaller scale, the job might
call for a more ‘hands-on’ approach. In many cases,
where owners may not live on the premises on a
permanent basis, the Estate Manager would live-in to
maintain a presence for the sake of continued
security. Usually, the role of an Estate Manager or
a House Manager would be residential.
Gardeners
Under -Gardeners will need to have basic skills and
experience and Head Gardeners will be much more
experienced, possessing an in-depth knowledge of
land management, horticultural expertise and the
ability to manage teams of staff and budgets.

A live-in or live-out role, a Handyperson can quite
literally turn his hand to most practical jobs. Each
individual will have a level of expertise in fields
such as plumbing, carpentry, basic electrics,
tiling, light building repairs in addition to
cleaning interiors and exteriors, such as windows.
They should also know when to bring in experts such
as gas engineers. Some may have gardening skills,
others, farm experience such as livestock care,
fencing and power tool usage. Many will have
knowledge of car maintenance, swimming pool and
tennis court care.
Security
A live-in or live-out role that involves all aspects
of safety and security for a property and estate
(which may include outbuildings, farm equipment and
so on). Knowledge of alarm systems may be useful.

sense and a calm attitude are essential and the
ability to work unsociable hours.
